Governor Bill Richardson Appoints Howie Morales to State Senate

Governor Bill Richardson announced the appointment of Howie Morales, Ph.D. to represent state Senate District 28. His appointment fills the vacancy left by the passing of Senate Pro-Tem Ben Altamirano, who held the District 28 seat for more than thirty years.

“Howie Morales has worked closely with Senator Altamirano,” said Governor Richardson. “I am confident that he will follow in Benny’s footsteps and serve the constituents of Grant, Catron and Socorro counties with the same compassion and commitment.”

Mr. Morales has served as Grant County Clerk since 2005. He also teaches leadership and government courses at Western New Mexico University. Morales previously worked in special education at Cobre Consolidated Schools and Silver City High School.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree in Bilingual Special Education from Western New Mexico University and a Doctorate in Philosophy from New Mexico State University.

Mr. Morales is a lifelong resident of Grant County and has shown great commitment to his community. He is the longest serving volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters in the state. He has been named District High School Baseball Coach of the Year five times and is a member of a number of organizations, including LULAC and Casa Mia Ranch, a non profit organization that works with individuals with special needs.

Mr. Morales’ appointment fills the vacancy left by Senator Ben D. Altamirano, who passed away on December 27, 2007. The appointment is effective immediately.
