The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of county owned facilities.

The construction of the 2nd floor of the Grant County Courthouse is at 33%. The contractor for the project is San Man Contractor from Silver City N.M. The construction is intended to provide a Jury Room, an additional Hearing Room, an office for our second Dist. Judge, and his administrative support staff.

The county will be advertising for a construction contractor to remodel the office area of the jail complex. The changes to the facility will offer additional space to house 24 to 32 of the inmates overcrowding the existing cell areas of the nearly 30-year-old structure. The added space will have four individual holding cells and the rest of the area will be a dormitory type of inmate containment. The control center will be at the center of the cell area and the officer in the control room will have visual of all the area. The current lobby of the facility will be divided into four offices for the administrative staff. The county hopes to have the construction completed by August 2004.

The maintenance personnel have been busy on working at the jail adding added security and operational modifications. The over population and type of inmates at housed at the jail has placed a lot of demand on this department.

The department has also assisted the New Mexico Health Office located on Silver Street in Silver City. The office has removed the old service counter installed new service cubicle type of work centers. The county offered demolition, tile work, and electrical upgrade.

The department is also responsible for delivering and reliving the voting machines used during the local municipal elections. 19 machines were used for this election, whereas we will deal with delivering 64 machines during the primary and general elections.
